Robert Trent Jones originally designed Shady Oaks in the mid-1950s for founder Marvin Leonard, a course that would become renowned as Ben Hogan’s home club during his post-retirement years. The design was a hallmark of the era’s new approach—meticulously engineered with long, narrow, tree-lined fairways demanding precision off the tee, and large, segmented greens that tested a golfer’s approach.
This architectural style remained until 2020, when the club commissioned the Australian firm Ogilvy, Cocking and Mead to undertake a comprehensive remodel. The redesign introduced a bolder, more expansive style with sweeping bunkers, fewer trees, and enlarged and repositioned greens. These changes have once again positioned Shady Oaks as a reflection of contemporary golf course architecture.
