Established in 1899, Austin Country Club is inextricably connected with the renowned golf instructor, Harvey Penick. Penick’s remarkable 82-year tenure with the club began at the age of eight when he started caddying at the original Hancock location. His early roles progressed from caddie to shop assistant and then assistant professional, culminating in his appointment as the club’s head professional in 1923, at merely 18 years old. Throughout his career, Penick coached and guided many of golf’s greatest players, including Kathy Whitworth, Ben Crenshaw, Mickey Wright, and Tom Kite.

In 1984, Austin Country Club relocated to its current setting along the Colorado River, just north of downtown Austin. The new location, which features stunning views of the Pennybacker Bridge, boasts a course designed by Pete Dye. This venue hosted the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play from 2016 to 2023, adding a modern chapter to its storied history.
